Community Earth Ovens

Torah M’Aretz, the Earth-Based Torah wing of the Living Lab is seeking volunteers to host community Earth Ovens at their home or on their land. Especially wanted is a site for the Jewish community of Santa Fe, NM, but also seeking locations in Oregon, the Bay Area and elsewhere.

Earth Ovens can be large or small, simple or ornately designed, and may be used by the host for personal cooking when the community is not using them. Torah M’Aretz is desiring to cultivate the use of community Earth Ovens for Challah baking, and for Matzoh Baking of aboriginal matzah during passover time. Earth Ovens can also be used, after challah baking, to keep shabbos food warm, and can in some communities be used to establish a kind of Eruv for the participating households.

Also soliciting designs for simple, on-site Earth Ovens which can be built in a day for Wilderness based Jewish events like the Aboriginal Seder during Pesach and the Days of Awe retreat.

Please contact Rabbi Sarah at etzalon@eberlatlivinglab.org if you are interested in hosting a community Earth Oven, or would like to participate in the building process, or are just interested, in general.
